On October 6, 2025, Swiss Post opened its largest warehouse logistics center in Villmergen (Canton of Aargau), with a total of 57,000 square meters of storage space. This strengthens its position in today's fast-moving, capillary goods and healthcare logistics. Consumer goods and medical products are handled in an automated infrastructure with a fully automated high-bay pallet warehouse, an automated miniload warehouse, and two robot-assisted Autostore systems, complemented by conventional pallet bays and separate hazardous goods areas.
In an interview with SRF, Christian Levrat, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss Post, said of the growth market of goods logistics: "At the end of the day, Swiss Post is doing what it has been doing for 175 years: It is following the needs of its customers. Today, our customers want these kinds of services (warehouse and distribution logistics – editor's note), yesterday they were more interested in sending letters, and we have to adapt." (1)
So what's behind the "Päckli" that arrive at the logistics center every day or leave it for the end customer?
Intelligent and partially fully automated warehouse management and monitoring of incoming and outgoing goods. Swiss Post is a long-standing GIGATON customer, and together they have implemented many demanding logistics projects – including the expansion of the Villmergen site. GIGATON LogoS manages and controls the entire flow of goods in the warehouse. The WMS ensures that every product is stored in the right place, retrieved at the right time, picked, packed, and consolidated for shipping. Whether this is done using fully automated or traditional warehouse technology.
René Schäfer, Head of Project Management at GIGATON, commented: "Connecting the innovative Autostore system to optimize call-off orders was a key task: As soon as an order is received, robots navigate through the "Cube Storage" systems and automatically hand over the desired small items to the employees for further processing or packaging. We have already established this goods-to-person solution together with Swiss Post at various multi-user sites, and in Villmergen, it has also proven extremely efficient, particularly for e-commerce logistics and healthcare logistics there."
"The integration of the various automated warehouse technologies from different manufacturers was a particular challenge for our software development," summarizes Matthias Wolf, Project Manager at GIGATON. "Each manufacturer's system has its own logic. At the customer's site, they are individually connected with GIGATON LogoS so that the entire flow of goods remains transparently controllable and can be monitored in real time. This allows workflows to be optimized and all warehouse segments to be used effectively."
"Päckli" with surgical sets
The automated infrastructure and efficient management of internal goods flows enable Swiss Post to process a wide variety of product formats for its business customers. The broad product range of storage customers in Villmergen goes from heating systems, household appliances, home, garden, and office supplies, cosmetics, food and specialty products to medical products and pharmaceuticals, including surgical sets. Inbound and outbound logistics are piloted via GIGATON LogoS in accordance with legal regulations and specific certifications. For pharmaceuticals and surgical instruments, for example, strictly controlled storage conditions apply, which are inspected by Swissmedic and certified according to the highest quality standards of Good Distribution Practice (GDP). Thanks to the consolidation of various products at the site, hospitals and clinics in Switzerland, for example, are supplied quickly and efficiently with various surgical sets, pharmaceuticals, medical products, and even consumables such as gauze bandages.
